Wholesale clubs offer good deals beyond those gallon jars of pickles. You can score bargains in the health and beauty-aid section by buying multiples of regular-size products, like deodorant four-packs. But be sure you’re getting a good price before you heave stuff into your cart. “Just because it comes shrink-wrapped in a case of 24 doesn’t mean it’s cheaper,” says Gary Foreman, founder of the Dollar Stretcher Web magazine
(www.thedollarstretcher.com). “It used to be that if you bought a bigger quantity, you got a lower price. But marketers now take advantage of that notion.” Track this, says Foreman, by keeping a running list of unit prices for frequently purchased items at both the supermarket and at the wholesale
club. Foreman says the best buys in wholesale clubs are on cleaning supplies: “At the grocery store, you’re paying for the marketing.” (And cleaners don’t go bad.) He
also recommends pharmacy items, especially for
marked-down prescriptions, which most clubs allow anyone, not just club members, to buy.
