If you're thinking of growing vegetables in the spring, designate and mow a patch of your lawn in the fall to make room for a dedicated bed. Then cover it with four layers of newspaper and a four-inch top layer of shredded fall leaves or bark mulch. Hose it down. Come spring, your compost blanket will have smothered the grass roots completely, and your bed will be primed for planting.
