So, you have your old-fashioned hand-crank models, your freeze-ahead canister models, and your souped-up compressor machines. But wait — there’s more. Here’s a way to burn calories before you consume them.

Fill the soccer ball–shaped Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker with cream, sugar, and vanilla in one compartment and rock salt and ice in the other. Then roll it around the yard for about 30 minutes nonstop and out come two to four cups (four to eight servings) of soft ice cream.

You do the churning; the ice and the rock salt do the chilling. Just don’t kick it, as the fully loaded ball is foot-crushingly heavy. (Available in pint and quart sizes, $30 and $40, at www.icecreamrevolution.com.)
