  • When Suzy Verrier and Kai Jacob bought North Creek Farm, in Maine, they envisioned a modest flower and vegetable garden and a simple new life together. They didn't anticipate making crab rolls and pie for a lunch crowd every day. But, as Verrier explains, they found themselves on a peninsula with only a few small grocery stores and a couple of restaurants. Today they run a cafe, a specialty-food store, and a farm stand, all housed in a rambling 19th-century carriage shed. Verrier, a rose specialist and the author of two books on the subject, tends the garden and cafe while Jacob, a former shipbuilder, maintains the farm structures.

For Verrier and Jacob, cooking should emphasize not fancy techniques but inherently flavorful food. Their simple, understated style of cooking can easily translate to any home kitchen.
