Eco-Beauty: What’s Your Favorite Earth-Friendly Product?

Looking around at all the eco-friendly fun going on yesterday, I got inspired to share some information about a few of my favorite green cosmetic companies. These businesses are doing all kinds of different things to ease environmental impact. The number one takeaway for me: there’s a planet-improving activity for everyone – even us harried multitaskers can help out, with the right info.
Has your beauty routine started going green? Let us know how in the comments section.
Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics
In addition to using fresh and organic ingredients, Lush gets major points for their packaging – or really, lack of packaging. Many products come completely sans container; we’re particularly fond of the bath bombs ($5.80 at Lush), fizzy balls of fragrant moisturizer you can drop into the tub. They even started subbing real popcorn for packing paper in shipped orders, simultaneously reducing paper waste and carbon emissions, since the snack food is lighter than paper and easier to transport.

Weleda
This UK-based company plants, harvests and prepares many of the ingredients that go into its products, and buys others through fair trade partnerships on three continents. And all you get is the good stuff: they use no synthetic colors, preservatives or fragrances and all products are free of parabens. The Skin Food moisturizer ($10 at Weleda) contains six natural essential oils and pansy extract to fight blemishes – and you only need the tiniest bit to reap the moisturizing benefits.

Dr. Hauschka
The couple that ran the U.S. branch of this German company was so invested in the holistic, healing mission behind the products that they turned the company into a non-profit to prevent a larger cosmetic conglomerate from snatching it up. The products, like the gentle Cleansing Milk ($33.95 at Dr. Hauschka) with grain extract and clay, gently pamper skin with natural ingredients, many of which are grown in sustainable gardens.

Most of the eco-brands I like are Italian, but I can recommend you Lavera from Germany.
Luh is not so green, and some products are actually quite bad! Solid shampoos and face creams... irritating or comedogenic. Bleuch.
