In the fall, a drop in temperature of even a few degrees can turn
an outdoor dinner party into the Donner party (without the extreme
measures). An outdoor mini-heater a scaled-down version of the
ones found at garden restaurants can rescue you. The now
affordable heaters, which run on propane or natural gas, are more
effective and portable than electric models and outdoor
fireplaces.
Real Simple likes the Endless Summer Table Top Patio
Heater (shown here; runs on propane; 36 inches high, 14-inch
base, $180,
www.kmart.com). It's powerful enough to warm people
within a 10-foot radius and so quiet it won't interfere with the
conversation.
