Warranty
Standard: One year, all
parts and labor.
Extended: For $100 to $130, you add three to four years of coverage for manufacturer’s defects and product failure.
Common Problem
“On a gas range, the thing most likely to break is the igniter on the oven,” says Tom Hankins, general manager of Best Service Company, in Denver. On an electric range, it’s the coils or the circuit board. Replacing the igniter costs about $150; replacing a coil, about $150; fixing a circuit board, $300.
Is It Worth It?
For gas, no. “Usually an igniter will last 8 to 10 years,” says Hankins. That’s long after the extended warranty has run out. For electric, maybe. The coils on the stovetop should last three to five years, but if you use your oven a lot, the strain on the system can cause other problems.
