Problem: Odor

Solution:
  • For washables: Miriam Lukken, author of Mrs. Dunwoody's Excellent Instructions for Homekeeping ($22, www.amazon.com ), suggests adding 1/2 cup baking soda (to absorb odor) and 1 cup distilled white vinegar (to destroy bacteria) to the regular wash cycle.

  • For nonwashables: Lay them on a sheet in the sun to air out for a day or two. Cover with a second sheet to prevent fading.
