1. Peel the onion, leaving the root end intact. Halve it lengthwise. Lay one half cut-side down on a cutting board. Make two or three horizontal cuts. Don't go all the way through.
2. Make evenly spaced vertical cuts, leaving the root end intact.
3. Rotate the onion 90 degrees. Cut downward all the way through for a perfect dice. The closer the slices, the finer the dice.
