DILEMMA:
You slide into a taxi and discover a wallet on the seat. Do you
turn it over to the driver or track down the owner and return it
yourself?
DETERMINATION:
Turn it over to the taxi driver. If the driver doesn't personally
locate the owner and return the property, he or she will often turn
the property in to the taxi company. "Protocol mandates that
drivers must try to find the people and return their goods within
24 hours," says Matthew W. Daus, New York City taxi commissioner.
"Even if it wasn't a requirement, I'm sure they'd do it. Most
drivers are Good Samaritans." In that spirit, New york City
cabdrivers have returned $20,000 worth of jewels, Yo-Yo Ma's cello,
the original clay figurines of Wallace & Gromit, and $38,400 in
life savings (in cash, stuffed in a paper bag). If for some reason
you suspect the driver won't return the property (and if contact
information for the owner is attached to the lost item), go ahead
and track down the owner yourself.
