A panel of eight people wine experts and nonexperts
alike convened to taste boxed wines produced by the most widely
distributed brands. The wines consisted of the most common
varietals on the market: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz,
Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio. Here, the panel's two favorite reds
and two favorite whites.
BEST: 2002 Banrock Station Cabernet Sauvignon
South Australia, $16
The panel's favorite Cab, it also won the vote for best in show.
Big, bold, and balanced, this is a more than adequate red-meat wine
and a great value.
2002 Delicato Chardonnay
California, $17.50
Fresh and a trifle unsubtle, this is refreshingly tart. Pair it
with hearty seafood dishes, like crab cakes and swordfish kebabs.
2001 Black Box Sonoma County Merlot
California, $22
It costs a little more than its peers but is well balanced, with
slightly musky notes of blackberry. It's bold enough to stand up to
smoky grilled foods. Try it with barbecued chicken.
2002 The Wine Cube Pinot Grigio
California, $16
Summery and citrusy, this wine which was specifically produced for
Target stores pairs well with flavorful fish such as salmon and
tuna.
