Even if you're landlocked, you can still give your rooms the
unbuttoned air of a seaside cottage. Start by adding some pale,
watery color perhaps in the form of lamp shades. Then bring in
something made of wicker or sisal. Both are inexpensive
materials that can lighten rooms filled with lots of upholstered
furniture. When the warm weather sets in, shift a tufted chair
to a spare room and replace it with a wicker one. Roll up
thick-pile carpets and leave floors bare or cover them with a
sisal rug, a cotton rag rug, or a dhurrie (a flat-woven cotton
rug). Since sisal can't be cleaned, you'll lengthen its life by
using it only seasonally.
