So maybe you're not going to go out and buy a new car just because gas prices are soaring. But when you do plan your next purchase, you may want to keep mileage in mind. Even downsizing to a smaller SUV can bring sizable savings. If you bypass a Chevrolet Suburban (15 miles per gallon) for the more economical Honda CR-V (24 miles per gallon) and drive 15,000 miles a year with gas that costs $2 a gallon, you will save $750 a year. Not to mention that the CR-V is about $10,000 less than the Suburban to begin with.
