Some beds encourage a deep sleep; others keep you tossing and turning. Often it's merely a question of what's lying between your sheets and your mattress — or what's not.

If you want to give your bed a boost, check to see if you have the right mattress pad before investing in a feather bed or a whole new mattress. If your mattress is new and plush, a pad made from a thinner material, like cotton, adds comfort and protects the mattress. If your mattress is old, a thicker, more textured pad, made from materials such as wool and foam, will add luxury and support. Foam makes a dramatic difference, but not a dramatic dent in your wallet. However, it retains heat and doesn't breathe, so isn't ideal for the warmer months.

The smartest all-around option is chenille. It's seasonless, machine washable, and highly absorbent. Plus, it has a price tag that won't keep you up at night. Here, Cuddledown Chenille Mattress Cover in queen, $79, 800-323-6793.
