Limit the hassle of security delays at the airport with these strategies:

  • Travel with a round-trip ticket bought with a credit card. Security is more likely to search you if you have a one-way ticket or you paid with cash.

  • Limit carry-on bags. Travelpro's new Rolling Tote ($140, Bloomingdale's, 800-232-1854) — introduced in response to the new FAA regulations that allow you to carry on only one bag and one purse or briefcase — has a laptop compartment and is compact enough to fit beneath most seats. (Why worry about those elbow-throwing early birds who score all the space in the overhead bin?)

  • Pack hair spray, large perfume bottles, and sharp objects in checked luggage.

  • Ship ahead. If you must carry on a box, don't seal it until you've checked in.
