Before calling a hotel chain's 800 number, check out prices
on-line at two or three third-party discounter sites. Knowing about
cheaper rates bolsters your bargaining power.
Don't accept the reservationist's first quote. Most likely you'll
be getting the "rack rate," the undiscounted price the hotel would
love you to snap up. Ask if the quoted rate is the only entry-level
rate available.
When you're booking with an operator, be specific about what you
want a room on a higher floor, away from the elevator, say. Ask
the hotel to note your requests on the confirmation. If you get an
e-mail confirmation, print it out to bring with you.
