Toaster ovens can do a whole lot more than toast. In fact, size notwithstanding, there isn't much an oven can do that a toaster oven can't--except make your entire kitchen feel like an oven or require noxious cleaners for all the grease and grime. Here are seven uses for your toaster oven that you may not have thought of.

  • Put it to work when you're entertaining: Keep rolls or appetizers warm without taking up valuable oven space.

  • Bake one or two cookies when you're on your own and don't want to be tempted by a whole batch. (Nestle Toll House cookie dough comes scored into individual cookies.) Or pop store-bought cookies in for a few minutes at 200° F to make them taste fresh-baked.

  • Grill vegetables: Brush them with a little olive oil and use the broil function (toasting works, too) to create an indoor barbecue.

  • Toast nuts for salads and stir-fries.

  • Toast stale bread to make croutons.

  • Broil a piece of lean meat or fish (fatty foods can be a hazard). The smallest toaster ovens can accommodate two portions; the larger ones, as many as six.

  • Reheat leftovers that need a little crisping. No one wants to eat soggy microwaved pizza.
