We've come a long way from the days of a metal tub and a length of
rope. The following innovations are now becoming standard
issue in the laundry room.
Agitator-free washers. No agitator means less abrasion, so
clothes are less apt to fade, fuzz, and pill. Since Americans still
prefer top-loaders (those with the door located on the top of the
washer), Maytag has come up with the Neptune, the first
agitator-free top-loader.Automatic detergent dispensers. Models that release detergent,
bleach, and fabric softener at the right moments are available from
Asko, LG, General Electric, Kenmore, and Whirlpool. This feature
allows each additive to work effectively without counteracting the
performance of the others. (For example, bleach and detergent added
at the same time can neutralize each other.)Automatic sensors that detect load size. Some washers can gauge a
load's weight and adjust the water level to conserve energy. Dryers
with sensors can judge how much heat is needed for a load, which
reduces wear and tear on fabrics. LG, Kenmore, and Miele all have
models that offer this feature.
