Trim the wicks (except on tapers) so that they are a quarter-inch
long. A shorter wick emits less soot.
Pillar candles should be burned one hour for every inch of their
diameter the first time you light them. This will create a large
melting pool and prevent tunneling (when the candle burns only in a
small area down the center). If you have a three-inch-wide pillar,
for example, keep it lit for three hours the first time (but don't
burn it longer than that or the melting pool may break through the
outer edge).
Keep candles especially tapers out of drafts.
Blowing out candles can disperse soot and splash wax. Use a candle snuffer instead.
Never leave candles unattended, and be aware of their placement, especially if there are children or pets in your home.
