Tasks and Fees
Installs extra outlets, ceiling fans, fixtures. Typically charges $35 to $70 an hour.

Where to Find One
Try a rating site, such as www.angieslist.com, or log on to the National Electrical Contractors Association's site (www.necaconnection.com).

Before You Hire One
Find out which fixtures you want and how much they cost, then give the bidder the specs. He may get a discount and can handle pickup and delivery.

Common Pitfalls
Complete ignorance about what a reasonable fee is. "A woman told me she was charged $1,000 to fix a circuit," says Atlanta electrician Denny Goodwin. "And the guy hadn't done what he said he had done."

They'll Know You Mean Business When You Say...
“What is your warranty on your work? Are you insured?” The person you hire should be able to provide a certificate of insurance.
