The Jed Clampett Decision (Also Know As Things That Keep You Up At Night)

200789768_7022fd20991

It's four o'clock in the morning and I'm watching The Beverly Hillbillies for the second night in a row. I've always been amused by the Clampett's fish-out-of-water adventures but I'd much rather be asleep. I can think of only a few good reasons to be up at this hour:

1. I am the new host of The Today Show.
2. I am on my way to the airport.

The first would prove to be a scary prospect for both the audience and myself. And the second would only be tolerable if the destination involved a fruity drink by the pool.

I'm awake because my subconscious won't allow me to get a good night's sleep. My mind has been wrestling with an issue and apparently it requires my attention. Now. Our minds and bodies are amazing instruments that run with precision and when something is out sync we'll get a subtle reminder. Mine is the 4 A.M. wake up call, yours may be something else. The key is to make a decision to deal with what's bothering you sooner rather than later. If you don't the gentle nudge will continue to escalate until it becomes a high pitched alarm you cannot ignore. When that happens, they'll be no snooze button.

So tell me this: Do you know what your signal is that your life is out of sync?

Oh do I! For me, when my life's out of sync, my body rebels. I get migraines, typically (when things are really off-balance), or else I get little aches and pains I wouldn't normally have. Louise Hay writes beautifully about this in her book "You Can Heal Your Life." She believes every thought/belief pattern we have expresses itself in physical form (dis-ease). Interesting stuff...

Anyway, you reminded me that I haven't seen an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies in more than 20 years! Loved your post - thanks for writing it.

Well I too get the wake-up call, maybe it's 3am or the spinning mind all night long instead, drilling on the issue of the moment or whirling through any and every random perceived mis-step I've taken in my current mixed up life. That's how it is in the dark when you can't sleep. Those issues grow and take on a life of their own like the scary monsters of our childhoods. Better to get up and watch t.v. than toss and turn in bed. Sometimes it helps to sit up and write it all down. Other times the stress presents in the form of a migraine, but truthfully the migraine usually comes after I've figured out how to deal with the issue and the relief of stress brings on the throbbing head. Go Figure! Wishing you peace . . .
