What NOT to Buy Mom for Mother’s Day

So you want to buy your mom (or wife) something tech-related for Mother’s Day. Assuming that she actually WANTS new technology, and not a new necklace, bouquet of flowers or breakfast in bed, there are plenty of great ideas for mom – including these from our fellow tech-blogger Dory Devlin and Yahoo Tech Blogger Christopher Null.

But here the list that really caught my attention – Gadget gifts NOT to buy mom. Pulled together by the folks at retrevo.com, a web site that matches non-geeks with gadgets, the “not to buy” list includes:

  • Non-Apple MP3 player – There are alternatives available (including the Microsoft Zune), but with a user-friendly interface, easy-to-use online store, and an array of pretty colors, the Apple iPod still is the “must have” mp3 player for mom.

  • Non-Wii video game system – Yes, the PlayStation 3 may seem like a better value because it also plays high resolution BlueRay DVDs, but let’s face it – mom is not a gamer. With the intuitive “Wii-mote," as well as the new Wii Fit, the Nintendo Wii is the way to go.

  • Low quality digital picture frames – All digital picture frames are not the same – so be aware before you buy. You probably want to give mom a frame that will start playing once she plugs it in.

A couple of items I would add to the “do not buy list” are:

  • Light Up Slippers – I found this on PC Magazine’s list of gift ideas for mom. Unless your goal is to make your mom look ridiculous - I'd skip the slippers. And, if your mom is really that clumsy in the dark, I would suggest you buy her the Clapper instead.

  • A modem – I found a couple of lists suggesting upgrading your mom’s internet speed with a new modem. But honestly, I can’t think of anything less interesting, or utilitarian (okay, maybe a new vacuum cleaner would be worse). So unless she actually requests a new modem – just don’t do it.

  • Technology – Just because you like technology doesn’t mean it’s right for your mom. So instead of a photo frame, think about putting together a small photo album with highlights from the past year. No batteries required!

Be honest mom  - Do you want new tech for Mother's Day? If so, what it is on your high tech wish list?

I always want new tech. The Centro Palm phone from Sprint is high on my list. I am tired of trying to text everyone with my little flip phone that has three letters and a number on one button! If my husband is reading this, make sure you get the pink one!

I want a chumby! But I know I am getting a spa certificate. It always brings a smile to my face.

An iPhone. Or any other phone that does more than mine currently does. :)

A DS - pink! I only got a picture of one for Christmas since my husband waited until the Saturday before Christmas to buy it. He then said the teenage sales people at every store just laughed and said, "I guess the next thing you are going to ask us for is a Wii!"

I can not get why non-ipod players are in the list....
I really can not understand why everyone adores ipods…I’m skeptical about them. I don’t differentiate between ipod, zune, creative zen or sansa. I’m buying the player that has balance between price and quality. I have sansa e200 from http://go.shopsansa.com/content/e200 . This player that is good and affordable, no useless features.

Hi prosansa!

I think the fascination with iPods is for reasons totally unrelated to playing MP3s. People (like me) like the design, and the brand. You are right, if you compare just features and cost, an iPod might not be the right choice.

The reason that I recommend iPods to my "non-technical" friends and family, is less for the actual iPod, and more for the interface with iTunes. Apple has done a great job of making the interface of both intuitive, and easy for someone like my mom to use.
