Greg Hartley, a former army interrogator and the author of I Can Read You Like a Book (Career Press, $16, www.amazon.com), offers this advice:

  • Try flattery. “Your skin is glowing. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were pregnant!”
  • Reveal a secret of your own. “I looked into getting hair extensions. Do you know anything about them?”
  • Guess. If you think your friend spent about $400 on a new bag, say, “I saw that those go for, what, between $200 and $500?” She’ll be tempted to correct you with something closer to the truth.
