Question:
Is it safe to machine wash a down comforter?

Answer:
Most down and synthetic-down comforters are machine washable. Use a mild detergent (such as Woolite) and a cool temperature setting. Dry the comforter on a delicate setting, and throw in a couple of tennis balls to help keep the down from clumping.

Remember: Frequent washing will affect the down’s loft (fluffiness), so limit cleaning to twice a year. (Include the job in your annual spring-cleaning sweep, for example, once the weather turns warm.) You can stretch the time between cleanings to every three to five years — and prolong the life of your comforter — by using a cotton duvet cover, which can be washed frequently. To control dampness between washings, hang the comforter inside or on a clothesline.
