Question:
Is it safe to machine wash a down comforter?
Answer:
Most down and synthetic-down comforters are machine washable. Use a mild detergent (such as Woolite) and a cool temperature setting. Dry the comforter on a delicate setting, and throw in a couple of tennis balls to help keep the down from clumping.
Remember: Frequent washing will affect the down’s loft (fluffiness), so limit cleaning to twice a year. (Include the job in your annual spring-cleaning sweep, for example, once the weather turns warm.) You can stretch the time between cleanings to every three to five years and prolong the life of your comforter by using a cotton duvet cover, which can be washed frequently. To control dampness between washings, hang the comforter inside or on a clothesline.
