What to Do: Think of a few key people in her network that you would like to speak to, then ask her if she would be willing to approach them for you. Prepare your source so that she knows exactly what you’re looking for and whether she can feel confident recommending you for a particular job. Give her a one-page summary of your relevant experience, skills, and personal qualities, as well as a list of your biggest work achievements, says career consultant Michelle Tullier. That way, she’ll have ready-made answers for any questions the prospective employer may have.
What Not to Do: Don’t make the request too broad. “Do you know anyone who could help me?” requires too much effort from your colleague.
Sample Script: “If you would feel comfortable with it, I’d love for you to pass my résumé to the marketing manager at your old company.”
