Question:
I’ve heard that you should not use a washcloth for more than one use because it can grow bacteria as it dries. What about those cute bath "poofs" that they sell everywhere? How long before you have to buy a new one?

Answer:
It’s smart to keep a watchful eye on any porous object that lives in your bathtub, but with proper maintenance, those shower puffs — as well as firmer natural sponges and loofahs — can be used for up to six weeks.

The gentlest of the bunch are the vinyl or plastic puffs, which aerate a body wash to produce lots of foam fast. To squeeze the longest life out of each, rinse it and wring it out after each use, then hang it someplace that will allow it to dry completely before your next lather. If you use the puff daily, replace it after six weeks.

The same advice applies to rougher natural sponges and callous-busting loofahs. Although these are advertised to last longer than puffs, dermatologist Fredric Brandt advises that you err on the safe side: "They might last longer, but why not replace them? They are inexpensive and often sold in kits."
