Most mouthwashes contain alcohol. Listerine’s gold formula, for instance, is nearly 27 percent alcohol. While it’s a potent germicide, alcohol can cause dry mouth and, some dentists believe, increase bad breath by ridding the mouth of saliva. If you prefer a no-alcohol formula, you have plenty of options.

  • All-natural brands, like Tom’s of Maine and the Natural Dentist, rely on a germ-fighting ingredient, like witch hazel or grapefruit-seed extract, to reduce bacteria counts.

  • Others, like Biotene and Crest Pro-Health, use chemical agents, such as cetylpyridinium chloride. Some also add moisturizers, such as glycerin and aloe vera, to prevent dry mouth.

  • If you need a no-alcohol fluoride rinse, try Tom’s of Maine Natural Anticavity Mouthwash, the only all-natural rinse to be awarded the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance.
