Make sure your child isnt accidentally sharing your personal information, as his name, address, phone number, date of birth, and school activities may be released to third parties.

  • Read every notice your child brings home or the school sends by mail. Watch for terms like directory information and opt out.
  • Ask for a copy of the school or district policy on surveys and third-party access to personal student information, as well as a copy of any survey questionnaires given to your child.
  • Request the schools opt-out form if you do not want directory information released to third parties — schools are required to respect your opt-out request. (You may also request that your child not be contacted by military recruiters visiting the school.) For more information and sample opt-out letters, go to www.leavemychildalone.org.
  • For more information about the privacy rights of minor students, go to the Department of Educations website at www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/om.
