This is especially important for compact fluorescent lightbulbs, which contain mercury. If you’ve thrown out the packaging, place bulbs in a shoe box lined with bubble wrap or tissue paper. Temperature does not affect the performance of bulbs, so you can store spares in the garage or the attic if you don’t have room in a closet.
