Plant a Garden by Color

A simple way to choose plants (issues of sun and soil aside) is by color. Even the most basic approach yields gorgeous results, as seen here.

The Limited Palette

There are probably as many ways to plant a garden as there are gardeners—and as many riotous color combinations. What we’re advocating here, though, is a subtler, monochromatic palette: a lush display of the delicate (or less so) shadings of one hue. It’s an intriguing approach to gardening, but a practical one, too. Restricting yourself to only a few chromatic variations—as with the larkspur and sage shown—will guarantee that all your choices are compatible in tone.
