How to Decorate a Christmas Tree

  1. Once the tree is lit, it’s time to add the decorations. Start with your tree topper first so that you don’t knock down any ornaments when you climb the ladder.

    Tip: There should be a foot clearance between the ceiling and the top of the tree to accommodate the topper.

  2. Use three similar-looking ornaments and hang them together, creating a triangular pattern. Vary the depths of the ornaments—one on an outer branch, one on an inner branch, and another above. This creates a harmonious rhythm and adds texture to the tree. Keep repeating this pattern, leaving a space between each set of ornaments.

  3. If you find that a branch that’s too weak to support an ornament or if there’s a gap in your tree, use this trick: Take some floral wire and loop it around the weaker branch, then loop the other end around a stronger branch above it.

  4. When you’ve finished decorating the tree, leave the room for a minute and come back to view the tree with a fresh perspective. Make any additional adjustments necessary. See more Christmas tree decorating ideas.
