Stick to these five easy skewering tips and your next cookout will be a breeze.

  1. Check

    Trim vegetables, fish, tofu, and meat to similar sizes before threading onto the skewer to ensure even cooking.

  2. Check

    Use a screwing motion to twist the skewer through tougher vegetables, like broccoli and fennel.

  3. Check

    Thread uneven shapes or slippery items, like shrimp and scallops, onto two parallel skewers for easier flipping.

  4. Check

    Leave a small amount of space between items on the skewer so that the heat can circulate evenly—with one exception. (See next tip.)

  5. Check

    Arrange citrus fruits on the skewer so that one of the cut sides (not the rind) touches the meat, fish, or vegetables. Instant marination.
