Chock full of savory onion jam, spicy mustard, crunchy apple, and creamy cheddar, this rustic sandwich translates the flavors of the iconic pub lunch into handheld form. Wash it down with iced tea--or even better, a pint of ale.

  1. Check 4 slices multigrain bread
  2. Check 2 teaspoons onion jam (or another chutney)
  3. Check 2 teaspoons whole grain mustard
  4. Check 4 thick slices sharp cheddar cheese
  5. Check 1 small apple, thinly sliced
  6. Check ½ cup watercress
  7. Check teaspoon kosher salt
  8. Check teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  1. Spread two slices of the bread with onion jam. Layer the cheddar, apple, and watercress on the two slices. Season with salt and pepper. Spread the remaining bread with mustard and top the sandwiches.
  2. Wrap sandwiches tightly with plastic film or wax paper if you are packing them, or serve immediately.
