How to Create a Braided Top Knot

Tired of throwing your hair into a typical top knot when you want it out of your face? Switch it up with this braided, half-up version that’s polished enough for the office but fun enough for a night out. Good news: It works on one- or two-day-old hair, plus it’s easier to do than it sounds and looks.

Follow These Steps

  1. Divide hair from ear to ear and pull the top section into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Since the braid will wrap around the base of the ponytail, you don’t have to worry about what color or kind of elastic you’re using.

  2. Spritz the length of the ponytail with a texturizing spray like Garnier Fructis Style De-Constructed Texture Tease Dry Touch Finish Spray ($4.50, to add some grip and fullness for the braid.

  3. Braid the length of the ponytail into a three-strand braid and secure with a clear elastic at the end, trying to leave as little hair hanging out as possible.

  4. Tug at the sides of the braid a bit to add texture and widen the braid, then wrap it around the base of the ponytail until it turns into a bun.

  5. Tuck in the tail of the braid and pin the bun into place using bobby pins.

  6. When time is on your side, you can add some texture to the remaining hair with a curling iron to dress up the look.
