Cold-Weather Fashion Travel Essentials Checklist

Baby, it's cold outside! Taking a vacation in a winter wonderland? Here's the stylish gear you'll need.

  1. Check Sweaters

A chunky cable-knit crewneck for daytime, plus a cardigan and turtleneck in cashmere or thin wool for day or evening. (Pick one neutral color palette, such as blacks/grays or browns/tans, and stick with it so everything can be mixed and matched.)

  2. Check White tailored dress shirt

Can be worn over the turtleneck or on its own. To avoid wrinkling, pack it on a hanger covered with dry cleaner’s plastic.

  3. Check A dress, jacket, and pants in the same color and fabric, such as wool crepe or gabardine

So many combination possibilities! For a polished look at dinner, pair the dress with the jacket or cardigan, the pants with the jacket or turtleneck, etc.

  4. Check Dark-wash jeans

These should go from day to evening, so avoid ones with rips or distressing.

  5. Check Silk long johns

  6. Check Long-john-inspired tee

Choose a cashmere or waffle-knit one.

  7. Check Flannel pajamas

They’ll be extra-cozy on cold nights.

  8. Check Waterproof down jacket

Look for one with a removable hood.

  1. Check Wool or cashmere beanie cap

Or consider wool, cashmere, or fur earmuffs.

  2. Check Sunglasses

  3. Check Scarves

One chunky knit muffler, and one thin patterned style for evening.

  4. Check Gloves

You might want to bring two pairs: a knit pair for daytime, and a leather pair for evening.

  5. Check Opaque wool tights or leggings

Wear them with the dress and under the pants for extra warmth.

  6. Check Boots

One casual pair lined with shearling or fleece, one dressy pair in leather or suede (with or without heels).

  7. Check Dressy shoes

    Either pumps or flats.

  8. Check Socks

An assortment of cashmere or wool pairs.

  9. Check Travel-sized umbrella
